Basic information about Šibenik

Šibenik is a historical town situated in central Dalmatia on a mouth of river Krka and Adriatic sea. It is placed on hills, bounded by three forts. It is the oldest town founded by Croats. The old part of a town consists of stone houses, narrow alleys with a lot of stairs. Small squares and numerous cultural and historical monuments give Šibenik archaic and romantic Mediterrenian athmosphere.

Šibenik is first time mentioned in year 1006 in a document of the king Petar Krešimir the 4th, and therefore it is often called Krešimir town. After domination of Croatian and Croatian-Hungarian emperors, Šibenik in 15 century became a part of Venetian empire. In that period was built the most famous historic monument, the cathedral of St Jacob, built in 15th and 16th century. During history the town was under Croato-Hungarian, Venetian and Austrian monarchy, which have left traces in historic monuments of a town.

Šibenik wells – a long time ago they were the only source of water for citizens. Today they are the historic attraction and the place where people can enjoy in numerous concerts and exibitions

Šibenik Museum - organizes temporary and permanent exibitions, it is situated in former dukes palace next to the cathedral, and it is open through entire year

St Krševan gallery – organizes exibitions of contemporary Croatian and international artists, it is open through entire year
